Exporting

The Maes-Glas flock has been actively involved in the exporting of breeding rams and ewes. In 2009, we exported rams to Romania, selling a total of 13 rams to the country.

We first sold 9 shearling rams to Romania in the Spring of 2009. The farmer was very impressed with them, and subsequently bought a further 4 shearlings in the late summer of 2009.

This initial exporting experience was most enjoyable, it was a fantastic feeling to see the breed develop to different countries and it was fascinating to learn how farmers from different cultures managed their sheep.

In February 2013, we exported 5 high indexed Shearling Ewes to Abu Dhabi as part of a breeding programme in the United Arab Emirates. The feedback we received from Abu Dhabi was very positive and this account was showcased on the Welsh Language farming programme “Ffermio” (Welsh for “Farming”) in 2013. The conditions in Abu Dhabi, further demonstrates the potential of the breed, and Maes-Glas genetics, in thriving under all climates and conditions.

More recently we have exported rams for pedigree breeding to flocks based in EU. In 2014, we exported a ram lamb to an established pedigree breeder in the Republic of Ireland with positive feedback. In 2015, we exported a ram lamb to Northern Ireland with positive results.

We would like to continue to export the best quality rams, ewes and lambs and would like to see farmers around the world manage Hampshire Down flocks. In addition to exporting within the EU, the breed has also been exported to other non-EU countries including Argentina, Kenya and New Zealand. The Hampshire Down is strong and versatile enough to cope with any climate. If you are organised with your sheep management then the exporting process is relatively straight forward. In addition to livestock, we are also excited about the opportunity to export frozen semen from some of our finest rams for export.

If you are not from the United Kingdom, but are interested in finding out more about the Hampshire Downs, do not hesistate to contact us.
